Manufacturer Recommended Maintenance
Whether new or old, low mileage or high mileage, it’s important to keep your Mini well maintained if you want to prolong the life of the vehicle and have optimum performance.
The theory is that the manufacturer should know best on what maintenance is required to keep the car functioning properly. The problem with that is that Mini may have different expectations on the lifespan of your car than you do. Most car manufacturers feel that 100000 miles is the lifespan and in BMW’s case their service packs actually only seem to be up to 5 years or 50000 miles, whichever occurs first.
The question is, are car manufacturers actually trying to push us all into a throw-away car society that has a new vehicle every three to five years?
Most of us don’t particularly want to waste that much money changing cars every few years. It’s bad enough how much the car depreciates in no time at all.
So are the schedules & maintenance plans created with your best interests at heart?
Or are they actually designed to maintain the car to the minimal so that it will conveniently develop a fault just as the service plan period expires, an encouraging motivation for you to part ex it for a nice new BMW.
The answer probably depends on how cynical you are!
At Swansea Specialists we like to get maximum value for money from our Mini's so we keep them maintained and running for longer than 5 years and having done way more than 50000 miles.
To do this we have stuck to the old school way of thinking which was that a car should be serviced every 10000 miles or 12 months, whichever is soonest.
Servicing isn’t just about keeping filters clean and changing oil, it’s like going to the doctors for a check-up because finding out somethings wrong early can make a big difference to the prognosis.
In the car’s case, it tends to affect your wallet less if we find a developing problem before something breaks.
Which Service Schedule?
The official Mini maintenance schedules depend on which era your car is. The information on this site is generally aimed at vehicles from 1999 onwards, we can help with older cars but if you want information on this please get in touch with our customer service team.
Up to 2004 majority of Mini's utilised the Service Interval Indicator (SII) system which had basic monitoring of the mileage and time since the last service. The schedules themselves alternated between an Oil Service, Inspection I and Inspection II. On newer variants there were also icons displayed when the Brake Pads reached the wear sensor or Brake Fluid was due to be changed.
From 2004 onwards Mini began to introduce the Condition Based Servicing (CBS) system which actively monitors various servicing components using sensors and programming for wear to allow a servicing icon to only be illuminated when something is needed. The schedules are separated to allow for this condition based monitoring and there are nine or so options ranging from the oil service through to the MOT Test.
